Finally! I am sharing the great news with you after announcing it to the world, except my blog readers. I'd been experiencing some technical issues with the blog, but all is well now. So here it comes!
"Pomegranates & Saffron" Won the Gourmand Best in the World Award! It happened on June 9, 2015 in Yantai, China where the Gourmand Award Ceremony took place. As I type these words, I am still in disbelief. It is hard to believe that a simple yet somewhat crazy idea to undertake something I had never done before–to write a cookbook–would take me this far, would sprout into something bigger than I had imagined back then. But it did happen. Which proves that even a crazy idea is a good idea if you believe in it:)

My book won a Special Award of the International Jury, which only was granted to a few out of 79 cookbooks that reached the finals out of hundreds of books that were submitted to Gourmand. I am over the moon happy and grateful that my book got noticed. I was nominated in a different category but won in a category that was only revealed on the day of the Awards, a special category that made me feel extra proud for my book.
Here's a snapshot of the event before the winners were announced.

And here's my reaction on stage:) My speech was unprepared and I was very happy and nervous at the same time, but I managed to thank my team who helped me with different stages of the book publishing, my family, and my friends all over the world for their support. Which is YOU! So, thank you for being there for me, cheering for me, and for believing in me.

LOS ANGELES, CA, June 13, 2015— On June 9, 2015, Gourmand World Cookbook Awards announced Pomegranates and Saffron: A Culinary Journey to Azerbaijan Best in the World in the Special Awards of the International Jury category. The book garnered one of the most prestigious and highest titles many cookbooks published in 2014 competed for. The event, organized by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, took place in the city of Yantai in China.
“Pomegranates and Saffron” is the first cookbook on Azerbaijani cuisine published in the US by AZ Cookbook. In the 320-page Pomegranates and Saffron readers can explore over 200 tempting recipes for appetizers and salads, soups and stews, pasta, meat, vegetable and egg dishes, breads, saffron rice pilafs, aromatic drinks, and desserts, all adapted for preparation in a Western kitchen. The book is comprised primarily of never-before-published recipes, along with favorites from the author’s blog, azcookbook.com. Interspersed throughout the text are glimpses of local culture and traditional food-related proverbs that will make the reader’s adventure even more memorable.
The Second Edition of the book is scheduled for release on September 30, 2015. It is currently available to pre-order on http://azcookbook.com.

]]>1. Tomorrow I am going to China. Sounds surreal to me, but this is happening. I constantly ask myself, "Am I dreaming?" My suitcase reminds me I am not. As you may already know, my cookbook is one of the Gourmand World Cookbook Award winners in the Eastern European category. In China, I will be competing against 10 other winners from around the world for the title of the Best in the World. The event will take place in the city of Yantai, which is in Shandong Province. By just looking at the pictures of the city alone and reading about it overfills me with excitement over the adventure that is to begin soon. The food is unique there and it is the wine capital of China. The Winner will be announced on June 9. Please keep my book in your positive thoughts and wish me luck!

]]>The post Vienna Chocolate Cake appeared first on AZ Cookbook.
]]>Spring is here and today I am sharing with you the most spring-fitting recipe ever! OK. I am not. I am bad, I know. Because today we have lots of chocolate on the menu. Wait! Chocolate has no season, right? You can enjoy it any time, right? Well, then I have all the excuse to post this recipe today for the most chocolate-rich chocolate cake I've posted on my blog to this day—Vienna chocolate cake. I spotted the recipe in one of Dan Lepard's baking books and fell in love with it from first read. According to the author, it is the simplified version of the original Austrian Sachertorte.
I set out to bake it. I have to confess I don't have a sweet tooth and I don't care for chocolate desserts as much as I do for lemon ones, I still wanted to try the recipe because I have a house full of chocoholics and I knew they would appreciate my efforts. Luckily, they did. And here's to all of you, my chocoholic friends out there—the recipe to try and the cake to enjoy!
